Cooperation agreement signed between PKU and University of Catania, Italy

Peking University, Dec. 14, 2018: From November 6 to 9, 2018, Professor Zhu Tong, dean of the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering of Peking University, visited the Department of Chemical Sciences of University of Catania (Unict) in Italy and discussed the common development of the two universities and their cooperation opportunities. On November 7, Francesco Basile, president of University of Catania, and Zhu signed a five-year cooperation agreement. The agreement provides for collaboration in both educational and scientific research projects, including bilateral scientific seminars, jointly offered courses, shared research facilities, as well as the exchange of undergraduate students, graduates, and faculties. Collaboration in publication and funding application is also planned. Roberto Purrello and Enrico Ciliberto, head and director of the Department of Chemical Sciences of Unict, and Enrico Greco, a postdoc of PKU College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, also attended the signing ceremony.

As an invited guest, Zhu Tong gave two special reports, “Respiration Affects Our Health” and “Progresses in Air Pollution Research in China”. In these reports, Zhu introduced the air pollution situation in China and illustrated the relationship between air pollution and health.

Founded in 1434, University of Catania is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Currently, there are seventeen departments and more than fifty thousand students in this long-established university. With the excellent research foundation of Unict’s Department of Chemical Sciences in the fields of materials chemistry and environmental sciences, the cooperation between the two universities will promote the cross-disciplinary integration of emerging materials and environmental conservation as well as improve international communication.
