Qian Xuesen Receives Life Achievement Award
Apr 01, 2009

Peking University, Beijing, March 31, 2009: On the evening of March 28th, the 2008 “You Bring Charm to The World” Award Ceremony was held in the PKU Centennial Hall. The world-famous scientist and the founder of China’s space science, Mr. Qian Xuesen, was awarded the Life Achievement Award. The award was set up this year in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China.

Mr. Qian is one of the pioneers and a distinguished representative in the field of space science and technology in China. In 1955, despite all the difficulties, he came back to China to join the grand cause of the country’s revival and prosperity. He has made critical proposals on the technological development of rockets and missiles, making distinguished contribution to the foundation and development of China’s aerospace undertaking. He has won the honor of “Scientist with Distinguished Contribution in China” and the special prize of “Two Bombs and One Satellite” and known as the “father of China’s aerospace” and “king of rocketry.”

Unfortunately, the elderly scientist did not show up at the ceremony that night due to his poor health. He presented apologies, but was glad to be recognized and supported by so many Chinese people since it’s his lifetime pursuit to the development of the country and the improvement of the life of the people. His wife, Jiang Ying, the famous vocal music educator, received the award and spoke on behalf of Mr. Qian, “May the event encourage more Chinese people to contribute to the development of our homeland and the world.”
