Chinese and South Korean scholars discuss COVID-19 control and prevention in East Asia

Peking University, November 24, 2020: On November 6, the Institute of State Governance Studies at Peking University and the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea jointly held an international webinar on the Comparative Study of COVID-19 Control and Prevention in East Asia. Dozens of scholars from Chinese and South Korean universities and research institutes met online to discuss relevant issues such as the epidemic prevention and control system, theory and experience in East Asia under the influence of COVID-19.

The event is the 15th international conference jointly organized by the Institute of State Governance Studies at Peking University and Sungkyun Institute of China Studies at Sungkyunkwan University. Professor Lee Hee Ok, director of Sungkyun Institute of China Studies, and Professor Wang Puqu from the Institute of State Governance Studies, delivered opening remarks respectively.

Lee pointed out that the epidemic prevention and control in East Asia has achieved remarkable results. The webinar was held to discuss the experience of East Asian countries in epidemic prevention and control, deepen academic exchanges and enhance mutual trust.

Wang said the COVID-19 pandemic is a common enemy of mankind. To fight against it, different countries had adopted different methods, which reflected their institutional and cultural differences. Therefore, it is important to conduct research in epidemic prevention and control and comparative study on the institutional and cultural levels to improve the effectiveness of state governance. Wang also looked forward to deepening exchanges between Chinese and South Korean scholars.

Following the opening remarks, the scholars held academic discussions on two sub-topics: “China and South Korea's epidemic prevention experience and governance” and “The practice of epidemic prevention and control in East Asia”.
