Peking University, March 10, 2018: The annual convention of the “Two Sessions”, CPPCC (Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference) and NPC (National People's Congress), held at the Great Hall of People in Beijing, has attracted close attention from the students and faculty members of Peking University. This article is part of a series of reports which, focusing on this year's CPPCC and CPC procession and corresponding discussions on campus, seek to make heard PKUers’ voices on state affairs.

The 13th National People's Congress (NPC) opened its first session on the morning of March 5th, 2018. One of the highlights of this session is a government work report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang. To acquire a better understanding of China's development and future prospects, the College of Engineering of Peking University organized the students to watch live stream and held a symposium afterwards, which was hosted by Wang Jian, deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League in College of Engineering.

This government work report, as was remarked by the students, was a thorough review of various achievements, such as economic structure optimization and upgrading, comprehensive deepening of reforms, improvement of people's livelihood, realization of sustainable development etc. The report also analyzed various problems concerning unbalanced economic growth in China, based on which the work plan of economic and social development in near future had been formulated and pronounced at the end of the report.

During discussion session, students shared their opinions and tentative proposals about China's future development. Tang Tianyu, Ph.D candidate in Class 2015 in College of Engineering, explored the topic of how to promote innovation. With more governmental investment in scientific research in recent years, more priority has been accorded to the transferability and industrialization of high-end research. Pressing issues like how to utilize technological advances to facilitate people's lives and improve research competence are discussed broadly. Qu Jinpeng, undergraduate student in Class 2014, commented that projects like the development of high-speed railway in China have been a huge succcess. Li Hanxi, Ph.D candidate in Class 2016 at Center for Life Sciences, argued that the critical illness insurance and tiered medical services are feasible propositions to tackle the medical and health service shortage problem in China.

A great many other matters are actively reviewed, including boosting of national consumption, distribution of education resources, implementation of the Healthy China project etc. This meeting marks the beginning of a series of Two-Sessions oriented discussions and studies, with more such activities soon to be held.
