The sharPKUngfu team wins honors in the 2015 International Competition of Underwater Robot

Peking University, Aug. 12, 2015: The 2015 International Competition of Underwater Robot was held from June 23 to 25 in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. As the sole team from Peking University, the sharPKUngfu team from the College of Engineering won excellent achievements of one championships and two first prizes.


Nearly 300 teams from 67 universities at home and abroad participated in the competition, breaking the records of the size of competition, the degree of technical difficulties and the number of participating countries. They included not only top national universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University, but also international institutions such as Groningen University of the Netherland, Aslesund University College of Norway and Induk University of Korea.

In the competition, robofish carry out different forms of match in the water, such as racing, synchronized swimming, water polo confrontation chase and race. Water robotics competition is both technically challenging and highly ornamental. For its comprehensive high-tech, exciting process and fierce confrontation, Water Robotics Competition has become a crucial platform to cultivate innovative talents, popularize and promote robotics, and nurture industry opportunities.

Like in previous years, the sharPKUngfu team comprised of a dozen students from the Intelligent Control Laboratory (ICL), College of Engineering, including undergraduate, master and Ph.D. candidates. The team is led by Professor Xie Guangming, director of ICL.

"Our team has an honorable history. We have been devoted to the exploration and development of robots for many years. In ICL, we’re creating a virtuous circle that the competition and academic research promote each other. Continuous research progress and excellent competition record should come shoulder to shoulder,” said Prof. Xie.

In recent years, the team has been interviewed by several state media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Education Television, Central People's Broadcasting Station, and Guangming Daily.
