The Nano Research Award was established by Nano Research, Tsinghua University Press and Springer in 2013 to recognize the outstanding scientists who have contributed significantly to nano research. With aims to further promote the development of nanotechnology, recipients of the award are selected once a year by the award committee made up of the editors-in-chief, associate editors, representatives from Tsinghua University Press and Springer. Candidates each year come from different countries and regions of the world.

Professor Liu, who is recognized globally as a pioneer in the field of nanomaterials, has made outstanding contributions to the research on the growth methods of graphene film materials, bringing new advances to graphene materials and technology. His series of breakthroughs led the rapid transformation of graphene materials from laboratory to industrialization, promoting the industrial and commercial production of graphene materials.
