Peking University, Nov. 14, 2013: Professor Yuan Ming, Director of American Studies Center, Peking University visited Duke University at its invitation and had a panel discussion with its faculties and students on November 1st.
Duke University attached great importance to this visit. Professor Peter Lange, academic dean of Duke University, welcomed Professor Yuan before Yuan was awarded the title of Chinese consultant of Duke Kunshan University (DKU) jointly set up by Duke University and Jiangsu Province, China.

During the panel discussion, Professor Yuan Ming talked with students and teachers about many interesting topics in depth, including the importance of university from the perspective of her personal experiences. "In an age of information explosion, information cannot take the place of knowledge and knowledge cannot substitute wisdom. University is the place to foster wisdom" she said. The teachers and students agreed. This notion of Professor Yuan Ming was later published by the official media of Duke University.
Students and teachers from Duke University exchanged ideas with Professor Yuan on university education in China, Sino-US relationship and history and how can the academics stick to their own principles. Yuan answered those questions with vivid examples based on her own experiences and expressed her regretless resolution to devote herself to education. Her speech inspired the audience.
She also showed her confidence on the development of Duke Kunshan University, saying that DKU, as the first joint school in China, surely would face challenges, but could provide opportunities as well.
After the panel discussion, Professor Yuan exchanged views with some graduates from PKU who were now studying in the Politics Department, Duke University.
