Peking University, Dec. 14, 2012: Professor Ke Yang, Executive Vice President of Peking University (PKU) and Deputy Dean of PKU Health Science Center (PUHSC), visited the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) from November 27 to 30, seeking more cooperation and communication.
The delegation was the largest in PUHSC’s history, with 42 members including researchers from the UMHS-PUHSC Joint Institute for Translational and Clinical Research (JI).

During their visit, the second anniversary symposium of the JI was held from November 28, focusing on the decisive factors of chronic diseases.
The JI Board meeting was held first, Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, the UM Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and other board members attended.
At the opening ceremony on November 29, James O. Woolliscroft, President of UMMS, welcomed the visitors from PKU. He highly evaluated the current cooperation between two schools, with an expectation for more cooperative programs.
In the speech made by Professor Ke Yang, she said that two schools could achieve win-win by sharing each other’s unique advantages, and eventually accomplish their common goal: promoting health welfare of people.

The panels, mini talks and workgroups were also held successively in the two days for experts from various backgrounds to communicate.
Previously, the delegation communicated with 12 local alumni in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Professor Ke Yang introduced the condition of PUHSC’s 100th anniversary, and invited the alumni to pay return visits to the Alma Mater.

Background Info:
In October 2010, the JI was founded with a combined commitment of $14 million. The Executive Board and Executive Committee were established at the same time for providing supervision and decisions.
The JI serves as a platform for PUHSC and UMMS, where both sides invest, initiate programs and implement cooperations. It is the largest international cooperation project ever held by PUHSC. The preliminary cooperation programs are in the fields of cardiovascular, endocrine, hepatopathy and respiratory.
