China-U.S. Cooperative Seminar on Energy and Climate Change held at PKU

The China-U.S. Cooperative Seminar on Energy and Climate Change was held on April 9th at Yingjie Exchange Center of Peking University. This seminar is sponsored by National Committee of Experts on Climate Change and Asia Society, and jointly organized by PKU School of Engineering and Tsinghua University Institute of Low-Carbon Energy. Dr. Zheng Guoguang, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Prof. Lin Jianhua, Executive Vice President of PKU, Prof. Xie Weihe, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Orville Schell, Director of the Center on US-China Relations of Asia Society, and Ms Clarie Lo Ku Ka-lee, General Secretary of China-United States Exchange Foundation attended the seminar and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. He Jiankun, former Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University.

Dr. Zheng Guoguang delivered the opening address first.  He said, the climate change is of high concern to the existence of humankind and the development of all countries, which has become the common challenge for the whole world.  This seminar has congregated the experts in energy & climate change from China and U.S.  Thus, he believed that it will play an active role in promoting the cooperation in climate changes between the two countries through their in-depth exchanges and dialogues.

 

Prof. Lin Jianhua stressed in his speech that as a comprehensive university PKU has paid great attention to the research and technology development on energy & climate and energy.  PKU College of Engineering has already set up Department of Energy and Resources Engineering, and deepened the cooperation with other researchers from home and abroad.  He expressed that as a global problem, there is wide cooperating between China and U.S. in energy & climate change.  In the end, he wished the success of this seminar.

 

In prof. Xie Weihe’s speech, he gave high evaluation of the seminar.  He thought there would be wide cooperation on energy efficient and clean using under the background of the globalization between China and U.S.  Prof. Orville Schell also expressed that this workshop will be helpful to change abstract policies into concrete actions by strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.

 

After the opening ceremony, experts from the two sides had deep discussions on “international cooperation on climate change”, “coping mechanism, challenges and opportunities”, and “methods for China-U.S. cooperation” from energy, economic, and political views.  They all agreed that this workshop has provided a good platform for the cooperation on energy & climate between China and U.S. who are respectively the biggest developing and developed countries.  Through their discussions and dialogues, they have proposed specific technical solutions to this problem, and provided concrete aims and steps for their cooperation.

 

It is reported that this seminar was funded by China-U. S. Exchange Foundation, founded by Tung Chee Hwa, Hong Kong’ s First Chief Executive, whose aim is to strengthen the understanding of the Chinese and the American.

 

There was also a dinner on the evening of April 8 at Lake View hotel, and nearly 80 experts from both China and the U.S. attended it.
