The First Youth Forum of Academy for Artificial Intelligence held at Peking University

Peking University, Dec. 02, 2019: The First Youth Forum of Academy for Artificial Intelligence was held at Peking University from November 23 to 25. Huang Ru, dean of the Academy for Artificial Intelligence, Yang Xuejun, member of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Academy of Military Science, and Xu Zongben, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from Xi’An Jiaotong University, were invited to give keynote speeches. The opening ceremony was presided over by Huang Tiejun, deputy dean of the Academy for Artificial Intelligence. More than 300 overseas youth scholars and PKU faculty members and student representatives from relevant fields and institutes attended this opening ceremony.

Huang Ru noted that artificial intelligence (AI) has dramatically developed and drawn great attention. Although there is a heavy mist of challenges in many fields, AI has deeply affected human life, production methods, business model and development of the society. Huang stressed that competitiveness in the field of AI can only be enhanced through the study of basic sciences and interdisciplinary research. In this way, it is possible to develop a tender AI that serves mankind in a controllable, sustainable and positive way. Huang also pointed out that the breakthrough of AI highly relies on professionals in this field. Peking University is one of the earliest universities that have established labs for AI research and have gained great achievements. Peking University offers an excellent platform for scientists to demonstrate their talents and welcomes all talented young scholars to join PKU.

Deputy Dean Huang Gang of Academy for Artificial Intelligence made a comprehensive introduction to the Academy. Yang Xuejun then gave a keynote speech on the breakthrough of AI based on computing thinking. Xu Zongben elaborated on the relationship between mathematics and AI and indicated that the integration of both would be a focal point of future research.

During the Q&A session, Yang and Xu discussed with teacher and student representatives on topics including the safety of AI, versatility of intelligent hardware, the advantages and characteristics of AI research in universities and enterprises.

During this forum, youth scholars from all over the world gave presentations and had deep discussions on their frontier research and achievements with the attendees.
