Symposium on Macanese Characteristics in ‘one country, two systems’ held at Peking University

Peking University, Oct. 24, 2019: On October 19, Macanese Characteristics in “One Country, Two Systems”: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Macao Symposium was held at Peking University. The symposium was co-organized by Peking University, Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, the Macao Basic Law Promotion Association, Macao Foundation, and co-hosted by PKU Center for Hong Kong & Macao Studies. More than 110 government officials, scholars, lawyers, and other eminent figures from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao attended the symposium.

At the opening ceremony, Qiu Shuiping, chair of Peking University Council, noted that Peking University has put strong emphasis on the cooperation with Macanese universities and secondary schools. Meanwhile, Peking University has established Center for Hong Kong & Macao to enhance the development of Macao Studies and provide support and suggestion to the implementation of “one country, two systems” policy in Macao.
Qiu Shuiping
Huang Liuquan, deputy director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said the success and achievement of “one country, two systems” policy in Macao proved the feasibility of the policy and the support from the public. He called for an in-depth research on the policy and the widespread dissemination of the Basic Law and the Constitution.
Luo Yonggang, deputy director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., summarised the reasons behind the success of “one country, two systems” policy in Macao. Lionel Leong, secretary of Economy and Finance of Macao S.A.R. went through the recent economic development and achievements of Macao.
In the keynote speeches, Lei Pui Lam, deputy director of the Macao Basic Law Promotion Association talked about the relationship between “one country, two systems” policy and patriotic education. Ng Chi Leong, chairman of Administrative Committee of Macao Foundation shared his insights about Macao Studies and the implementation of “one country, two systems” policy. Chen Ruihong, professor of Peking University Law School and member of Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Macao Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee, talked about the national identity of Hong Kong and Macao citizens.
Following the opening ceremony, three sessions of the symposium were held in the afternoon, focusing on three major aspects: the economic development of Macao and its role in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Macao’s culture and social development and the enforcement of the Basic Law and Macao’s legal development.
The symposium reviewed the implementation and achievement of “one country, two systems” policy in Macao in the past two decades. Besides, discussion on the economic, cultural, social and legal development related to the policy was also covered.
