Peking University, April 28, 2019: On April 27, Peking University held Sci-Tech Innovation Conference at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center and declared the establishment of Academy for Artificial Intelligence. Vice director of Ministry of Science and Technology Huang Wei, Vice Director of National Natural Science Foundation of China Xie Xincheng, Director of Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Education Lei Chaozi, Director of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission Xu Qiang, PKU Council Chair Qiu Shuiping and PKU President Hao Ping attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
At the meeting
Instructed by Xi’s discourse about sci-tech innovations, geared to the needs of international sci-tech frontiers, national crucial demands, and national economy, and themed on “renovating sci-tech management mechanism and serving national strategic demand”, the conference made an overall plan and long-term layout about PKU sci-tech innovations to expedite the building of a world-class university with advanced sci-tech levels.
Huang Wei said that PKU had achieved a series of scientific and technological achievements practically in the past 120 years and hoped that PKU could continually give prominence to scientific and technological innovations. Lei Chaozi explained the new requirements and orientations of scientific and technological tasks of universities in the new era. Other participating leaders also expressed their hopes in the scientific and technological innovations in PKU.
Leaders and guests jointly inaugurated the Academy for Artificial Intelligence, which is to serve as the main platform for PKU to build world-class intelligent disciplines. Guided by the AI Innovation Action Plan for Universities, the research domains include mathematical and cognitive sciences of artificial intelligence, intelligent perception, machine learning, brain computing and so on. Huang Ru, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will serve as the first director of the Academy.
