Peking University holds a symposium boosting the discipline of Chinese Language and Literature

Peking University, April 23, 2019: A Symposium on "Facing the Future: Discipline Development and Academic Innovation of Chinese Language and Literature" was held at Yingjie Exchange Center, Peking University (PKU) on April 11. Hao Ping, president of PKU, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Participants also included leaders, experts and students from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of other universities, with the number exceeding 300.

In his address, Hao reviewed the discipline development of Chinese Language and Literature at PKU, saying that this discipline has always been closely linked with the country and the whole society, as it has always been served to boost our confidence about the profound Chinese culture.

Hao added that the discipline development of Chinese Language and Literature is facing severe challenges today, and PKU will step up efforts to propel it. Teachers and students of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature should rise to the challenge, making the Department become an innovation powerhouse for scholarship, education and culture.

At the symposium, Chen Xiaoming, dean of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, revealed the proposals of setting up three discipline platforms within the Department, i.e. “Classical Chinese Literature Platform”, “Contemporary Thoughts and Literature Research Platform” and “Language and Human Complex System Research Platform”. Chen noted that the three platforms will be based on the ideological understanding in the present era and the development stage of the Humanities over the past one hundred years, so as to promote new ideas, new methods and new horizons through a larger discipline structure.

On the afternoon of April 11, the round table on “Discipline Development and Academic Innovation of Chinese Language and Literature” was successfully held at Lee Shau Kee School of Humanities. More than 50 leaders and teachers from several key universities attended the discussion. Zhang Hui, deputy dean of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, chaired the meeting. Experts and scholars had in-depth discussions on multiple issues related to discipline development. Finally, consensus was reached as follows: the development of the discipline should be served to prosper Chinese culture as well as to establish national cultural confidence; moreover, the research on the key issues surround Chinese language and literature will be expected to bolster the development of this discipline and national cultural confidence; finally, we should appeal to relevant departments to place emphasis on the discipline development of Chinese Language and Literature in the process of enriching Chinese culture.
