The “Double First-Class ” Construction Alliance established

Peking University, October 28, 2018: On October 24th, an inaugural meeting of the medical "Double First-Class" Construction Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the Alliance) led by Peking University was held in Beijing. More than 250 leaders, hospital directors and educators from nearly 70 colleges and universities attended the meeting.

At the beginning of the meeting, Zhan Qimin, chairman of the Alliance and executive vice president of Peking University,  gave a welcome speech and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission  for their concern and support to the Alliance. He pointed out that building a world-class medical discipline with Chinese characteristics, cultivating first-class medical talents, helping the construction of a strong and healthy country are the common missions of Chinese medical colleges in the new era. To establish a "Double First-Class" Construction Alliance for medicine is to build consensus and gather strength, and to promote the reform and innovation of medical education and medical discipline in China.

Lin Huiqing, vice minister of Ministry of Education, and Chen Xinyu, deputy director of Department of Science and Technology Education of the National Health Commission, also delivered important speeches at the meeting. Lin and Chen said that the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission would pay close attention to the development of the Alliance and actively cooperate with relevant departments to perfect policies, create conditions, strengthen guidance, and provide support and guarantee for the Alliance. Together with Zhan, they led the unveiling ceremony for the medical "Double First-Class" Construction Alliance, and all the participants witnessed this important moment.

After the meeting, the Alliance immediately held the first medical "Double First-Class" construction forum. Important issues were discussed, including working arrangements and rules for management.  The Alliance invited experts in medical education and scientific research in China to form an expert advisory committee, and Han Qide, former vice chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC, was appointed to be the chairman. In his speech, Han Qide emphasized that as a group spontaneously organized by colleges and universities, the Alliance should closely focus on exchange and cooperation, guidance and demonstration, decision-support and evaluation to complete the work with high standards and strict requirements. 

The founder-members of the Alliance include Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and other 5 famous universities. In the future, based on the needs of the work, other colleges and universities will be absorbed accordingly.
