Peking University, March 9, 2018: The 11th Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Conference (APOC) was held in Philippine from March 4th to 7th, 2018. More than 900 orthodontists from Asian-Pacific Region attended the conference. During the conference, Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) held an election and Professor Zhou Yanheng, from School of Stomatology, Peking University, was elected as president of APOS. This is the first time that a Chinese doctor has been voted to be president since the foundation of APOS in 1991.
Professor Fu Minkui, former dean of PKU School of Stomatology and former director of the department of orthodontics, was awarded Honorary Fellowship of APOS. The honorary fellowship of APOS is the highest honor accorded by the society.
Bryce Lee, Nikhilesh Vaid, Loh Kai Who, Somchai Satravaha, former presidents of APOS, extended their congratulations to Professor Zhou Yanheng. The president and members of the Executive Committee of World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) also expressed their congratulations to Professor Zhou with sincere wish that the society would thrive and prosper.
The Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) was inaugurated on October 10th, 2001 in Tokyo, Japan. Original founding affiliates include 9 associations of orthodontists from countries and regions like Japan, China, Korea, Singapore and Thailand. With the growing of its influence, APOS has embraced more societies to join in the society, including those from Australia and New Zealand. Today APOS has grown to have 19 affiliate members and represent the highest level of academic organization of orthodontics in Asian-Pacific Region.
The election of Professor Zhou Yanheng as the president of APOS shows the recognition of the academic influence of orthodontics in China and will certainly promote the international development and exchange of orthodontics in China.
Brief Introduction of Professor Zhou Yanheng
Zhou Yanheng, a professor, chief physician, doctoral tutor at School of Stomatology, Peking University, is the executive committee member of World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), president of Asia Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS). He is also the former chairman of Orthodontic Specialized Committee of Chinese Stomatological Association, fellow of International College of Dentists (FICD), member of International Association of Dental Research (IADR), adjunct professor of Case Western Reserve University, and visiting Professor of University of Pennsylvania.
