Peking University, Dec. 12, 2017: The two-day-long fourth North Pavilion Dialogue annual meeting was wrapped up on December 10, 2017 in Peking University. Some former political leaders and preeminent scholars convened at the meeting to discuss about the political situation in the contemporary world as well as China’s role on an international stage.
This year’s meeting invited 10 honorable guests from foreign countries, among whom there are Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia; Joseph Nye, professor from Harvard University; John Negroponte, the former United States Deputy Secretary of State, and veteran politicians and prominent scholars from other countries. China’s former State Councilor, Dai Bingguo, who also holds the title as honorary president of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies, Peking University, attended the meeting and delivered a key-note speech. Other high-profile attendees from China also attended the meeting.
North Pavilion Dialogue this year is themed on “adapting to a new era of world politics”. The world politics has witnessed an increase of balance and the reappearance of geostrategic competition between world major powers. What’s more, populism and radical nationalism are sweeping across many parts of the world. On the other hand, confusions grow over the United States’ domestic politics and foreign policies; the denuclearization and restoring of peace of the Korean Peninsula is confronted with unprecedented challenges; political crisis still hangs heavily on the Middle East, while Europe is daunted by the issue of immigrants and refugees. It is against such a complex international ground that China strides onto the center of the world stage, striving to promote a community of mankind with shared future while upholding to the path of peaceful development. It is a common challenge for China and other countries to understand some new trends in the world and to explore new ways of cooperation and development.
This year’s North Pavilion Dialogue included a closed-door conference for one and a half days, a half-day open public forum, and three lectures. During the closed-door conference, the attendees focused on topics including huge impacts brought by the United States under Trump’s administration on world order, the situation in the Korean Peninsula, and other hot issues. Moreover, they also exchanged thoughts on China’s new role in world politics and propounded many valuable suggestions.

The Institute of International and Strategic Studies at Peking University was formally established in October, 2013. Having abundant intellectual resources, the institute undertakes research projects on the demands of relevant government institutions and corporations. It is aimed to provide high-quality consultancy for China’s international strategies and foreign policies. From the year of 2014, the institute has been holding North Pavilion Dialogue once a year in response to President Xi Jinping’s call for “constructing think tanks with Chinese characteristics”.
