Peking University, October 18, 2016: The 2016 Phoenix International Forum, sponsored by the Institute for China-US People-to-People Exchange, Phoenix New Media and Phoenix TV, was held at the Beijing Four Seasons Hotel. The forum lasted for 3 days. The three days focused on topics of the elimination of poverty, world order and China’s great strategy, and Chinese corporate in world market respectively. It drew extensive attention and achieved great success, with more than 500 guests attending.

Jia Qingguo, Dean of the School of International Studies at Peking University, hosted the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. Cai Wu, former minister of Culture, and Dmitry Fyodorovich Mezentsev, president of the China-Russia Friendship Association and former secretary of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, also attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Before the opening ceremony, Jia Qingguo had a meeting with Zhou Tienong, former vice chairman of Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and former chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang.
During the opening ceremony, Jia Qingguo warmly welcomed all the honorable guests from all walks of life, and Liu Shuang, the CEO of Phoenix New Media, affirmed the company’s historical duty to bridge the communication gap between China and the world. Meanwhile, Dmitry Fyodorovich Mezentsev shared his opinions on threats and challenges that our world is facing currently, under which China and Russia are expected to take their mission. The ceremony ended with Cai Wu’s sublime speech that reiterated the proposition of “Community of Human Destiny”.
The soft power forum hosted by Yao Yao, director of Research Department of China Public Diplomacy Association, was subsequently held. Experts from different areas thoroughly discussed China’s diplomacy and oversea social image of China. Later during the luncheon, Jia Qingguo analyzed the prospect of the US presidential election between the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and the Republican candidate Donald Trump. It will surely exert great influence on Sino-US relations.
In the afternoon of the same day, Qiu Zhenhai, from Phoenix TV, hosted a debate on“China ‘s Great Strategy at Crossroads”. Luo Yuan, major general of the People's Liberation Army, Su Ge, president of China Institute of International Studies, Zhang Ruizhuang, president of institute for International Studies of Nankai Uniersity, Professor Tang Shiping and Professor Feng Yujun from Fudan University and many other famous scholars attended. China’s international strategy, the hot issue of South China Sea and the long-lasting dispute of the Korean Peninsula were intensely debated. In the two later forums on energy and environmental protection, experts from the government, professionals and many scholars shared their insights over the changes of the world energy framework, consequent measures that China should take and more topics like China’s green development opportunities.

The tide of globalization is irresistible, some surfers fell down and drowned, some has rushed for thousands of miles and are still heading for their destination. Standing right on the crossroad of development, China should march more cautiously and wisely with openness, and solidarity of the entire society. That is China’s duty, and China’s mission.
