Peking University, April 21, 2016: On April 18, Peking University and the representatives from eight New Zealand universities signed in the Great Hall of the People the Memorandum of Understanding on the New Zealand Center of Peking University under the presence of the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

This signing ceremony is an important part of the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key’s formal visit in China. The Chinese premier and the New Zealand Prime Minister witnessed the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation documents on agriculture, scientific research, quality inspection, finance, education and so on. The document concerning PKU’s New Zealand Center is the only document signed in the educational field.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the New Zealand Center of Peking University means that the development of PKU New Zealand Center has entered a new stage. Peking University is going to build the Center together with eight comprehensive New Zealand universities, including University of Auckland, University of Otago, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Auckland University of Technology, Massey university, Wellington Victoria University and Lincoln University. Meanwhile, representatives from the New Zealand’s Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Innovation and Employment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as Education New Zealand became members of the PKU New Zealand Center Central Committee.
In the future, the PKU New Zealand Center will establish more platforms for the exchange in politics, economy, culture and education between China and New Zealand to enhance the communication and understanding of the two countries. At the same time, this Center will carry out work on New Zealand study, think tank building, policy advisory and so on.

Established in 2007 under the support of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and New Zealand, the PKU New Zealand Center serves as both research institute and platform for communication between China and New Zealand. In the past 9 years, this Center used PKU’s academic resources, teaching resources as well as other resources to promote the development of New Zealand study and has greatly contributed to the cooperation between China and New Zealand in various fields.
