Peking University, May 11, 2020: On May 1, “My Income” - the English version of the online service of checking personal income was officially launched on the portal pages of Peking University, which marked important progress of PKU’s internationalization. Several offices of PKU, such as Office of International Relations, Office of Human Resources, Office of Financial Affairs, and Computer Center, cooperated to develop the service.
In recent years, PKU has attracted more and more international talents with its improvements of internalization level. Currently PKU has 117 international teachers and 71 postdoctoral fellows, who have contributed immensely to the campus' information service and put forward new requests. Since Chinese online systems troubled the international PKUers, PKU has been trying to provide more English versions of information services.
Since 2019, the Office of International Relations, cooperated with several other offices, determined to seek breakthroughs in providing the service of checking personal income in English. Accurate translation is the biggest challenge of developing the English query system, that is, how to briefly and concisely translate the terms into English and how to neatly present them on computer terminals. The Office of Financial Affairs first comprehensively and systematically organized multiple terms about “personal income” and then the Office of Human Resources offered detailed explanations. Based on proper understanding about those terms in historical and cultural context, faculties and overseas students worked with the Office of International Relations to provide accurate translations.
The second challenge of developing English applications is how to easily and smoothly gain access to the English and Chinese service in line with the users’ habits. After careful consideration, the Peking University Computing Center decided to develop the English version of the information service by parts and to progressively establish a complete English service system. Now, the portal of Peking University can adjust the buttons of “Login” and “Logout” according to the system environment of users’ computers. If users do not use the Chinese operating system, the “Login” and “Logout” buttons will present in English. By clicking “Login”, users can access the English service of “My Income”.
The English version of “My Income” service allows the University to better serve international faculties and shows PKU’s advances in promoting its level of international services and cooperation between offices.
