Peking University holds New Year’s Gala welcoming 2020

Peking University, January 1, 2020: On the evening of December 31, 2019, Peking University held New Year’s Gala at PKU Hall, waving goodbye to 2019 and ringing in 2020.

The gala started with stunning video clips reviewing PKU's achievements in 2019. The fervent opening music “Boat Dance”, given by PKU Folk Orchestra, delighted everybody on the spot. PKU President Hao Ping delivered his best New Year wishes to all PKUers and friends who support the development of the university. In the ever-changing era, Hao encouraged all PKUers to keep striving for new progress and innovation.

Seventeen fascinating and diverse performances, such as magic shows, Peking Operas, cross talks and more, were staged during the three-hour gala, filling the night with fantasy and fun.
The dancing performance “Ne Zha”, based on the popular movie telling the famous traditional deity of a rebellious character, showed how the traditional style and the modern dancing met and melt. Performers vivified the famous legend and figures, displaying the unique glamour of the traditional art. Song Xi, a master’s student who was honored as “Beijing Role Model for 2018”, stunned the crowd with an emotional and beautiful song called “Beacon”. Student magician’s close-up magic tricks won cheers and applause, while the cross talk provoked rounds of laughter and brought down the house with jokes from daily lives. In “A Day on Chang’an Avenue”, PKU volunteers who took part in the grand parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1 revealed stories behind the scene.

As 2019 came to a close, the audience counted down together welcoming the start of a new decade. Sincere wishes from professors and alumni filled the screen and warmed the heart of each and every PKUer.
