Based on research and polls of the students’ preferences and interests, the Center of Dining Service prepared 12 traditional Chinese delicacies, including steamed buns, Sichuan Dragon Dumplings, etc, which all met with a warm reception. Quizzes and games also spiced up the tasting, providing the students with a rare and first hand opportunity to enhance their understanding of the history, heritage and culture behind the Chinese cuisine.

The students also had a chance to try Chinese cookery themselves. The participants made Peach Mantou, a traditional birthday dish that expresses wishes of longevity and happiness, under the guidance of the school culinarians. Kneading the flour to the shape of a peach turned out to be a challenging task for the students, yet also a pleasurable and rewarding one; prizes were given to the best peach-shapers.

The event followed the recent establishment of the Resident Assistant Committee, a body dedicated to creating an enjoyable community life in Zhongguanyuan Global Village, residence for PKU’s international students. The committee seeks to promote a sense of amity and fellowship through active cultural exchanges.
