Peking University outshines Tsinghua University in the CUBA northeast division

Peking University, Mar. 29, 2019: On March 24th, the northeastern division final of the 21st Chinese University Basketball Association (CUBA) was held at Cao Guangbiao Stadium of Tsinghua University (THU). Peking University (PKU) scored past THU, 74-69, wining the regional championship for four years in a row.

After the opening whistle, PKU led 11-0 at the very beginning, forcing THU to call a time-out. After the break, THU shifted their strategies to keep passing the ball to Guo Jian who had the inside track. Guo’s breathtaking offense successfully enabled THU to cut the lead. After that, Wang Lanqin and Guo Zi’ang, both the guards of THU, made many active breakthroughs and perfect passes, effectively undermining the defense of PKU. As a result, THU led 35-32 at halftime.
Zhang Ning, who is the guard of PKU, gave his cannot-miss second-half showcase to lead PKU to make up the losses. The scores were close and there was no prediction who would finally win the game.
In the fourth quarter, when facing the opponents’ great defense, Wang advanced twice to slam dunk, followed by a three-pointer delivered by Zhang. Their performance helped PKU take back the lead. At the end of the game, although Wang fed PKU with successive three-pointers, THU failed to turn the table. Eventually, PKU beat THU by the score of 74-69. This is the fourth victory for PKU in the northeastern finals of CUBA, three of which were against THU.
In the game, Zhang Ning scored 28 points and supplied 6 rebounds and 4 assists. He made some tough shots at many crucial moments and his incredible performance won him MVP. Apart from Zhang, Wang Shaojie, another team member from PKU, also did a good job in the final with 28 points and 14 rebounds.
