Peking University, Apr. 11, 2014: During national Qingming Holidays, thousands of tourists flocked to PKU campus, a hot spot famous for its beauty and cultural atmosphere. It is the same every year. But this time, many of them received special treatment: a group of PKU student volunteers offered them free tour guide, making the campus tour a more informative and memorable experience.
These volunteers are from a group called “PKU Name Card”, which was founded last October. They are just normal students at PKU but serve as campus tour guides during the weekends and holidays. Over the past three-day holidays, over 40 volunteers provided service to a total of 1,500 visitors to PKU.
Some of them stationed at Boya Tower near Weiming Lake and West Gate to offer touring services while others guided groups of tourists on well-planned touring route around the campus. They told visitors stories of the school’s history and landmarks including Boya Tower, Weiming Lake and PKU Library, the three of which are widely dubbed as “Yi Ta Hu Tu” (It means a tower, a lake and a library but sounds like a Chinese idiom meaning a complete mess).
While presenting PKU’s rich history and culture to the tourists, they also cautioned the tourist to protect the cultural relics dotted around the campus. Besides, volunteers shared their own experiences to give the visitors a taste of what it feels like to study and live on the campus of the China’s top university.
"Peking University impressed me a lot with its profound culture. Thanks a lot for these warm-heated student volunteers,” a visitor wrote on the comment book.
The “PKU Name Card” volunteers have changed the campus tour from arriving and departing iconic landscape like clockwork into a whole new cultural experience. Their mission is “to let people know more about PKU and make more people love PKU campus.”
