PKU State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environmental Simulation Passes Assessment
Apr. 14, 2010

Peking University, Beijing, April 13, 2010: Commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Assessment Panel of National Natural Science Foundation assessed the "State Key Joint Laboratory of Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control" from April 9 to April 11. As one of the four joint laboratories, PKU State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environmental Simulation was also assessed.

On the morning of April 10, the Assessment Panel conducted an on-site assessment for PKU State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environmental Simulation, located at the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Prof. Lin Jianhua, executive vice president of Peking University, Academician Tang Xiaoyan and some other leaders warmly welcomed the experts, and attended the entire assessment process.

The general introduction on the Key Laboratory, made by Lboratory Director Prof. Hu Min, rolled up the curtain of the Assessment, which was then followed by a video projection "for the blue sky", and an exhibition on the laboratory’s most representative accomplishments, both demonstrating the 5-year academic achievement of the laboratory elaborately. Afterwards, the experts paid a visit to the lab rooms and interviewed researchers and employees. Around midday, the assessment procedure was successfully completed, with remarks of satisfaction by the Assessment Panel.

As the pioneering institute of atmospheric chemistry research, PKU established its related researches as early as the 1970s. In 1995, the Atmospheric Environment Simulation Branch Office under "State Key Joint Laboratories of Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control" was officially launched. With ten years of development under its belt, especially in the last five years, the laboratory has formed several distinctive international academic directions, including chemistry of atmospheric environment, atmospheric environment simulation and pollution control, environment and health, environmental performance and many others. The basic and applied basic researches conducted by the research team have not only greatly supported the development of high-tech pollution control technology, but have also promoted the progress of environmental science and technology, and significantly contributed to the environmental management and decision-making in China. During the years of 2005-2009, the laboratory team published a total of 369 papers (including 214 SCI papers), among which 84 papers were admitted by the world-class publications, including "Science", "Environmental Science & Technology", "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics", "Journal of Geophysics Research" and "Atmospheric Environment". In addition, 11 patents have been authorized to this very laboratory. To sum up, all of the above accomplishments has fully demonstrated the scientific and technological innovation capability of the laboratory research team.

In order to face the global climate change and air pollution challenges in China, the PKU Key Laboratory will continue to uphold the "diligent, rigorous, pragmatic and innovative" scientific philosophy, as well as the strategic objectives to serve the "state environmental protection and sustainable development". Focusing on the major atmospheric environmental issues concerning our own country and the rest of the world, the Key Laboratory will persist in promoting the development of relevant disciplines and technology, and continue to make new and greater contributions to the realization of the harmonious relationship between human and nature, and the sustainable development of our society.
