Colombian President lectures on “To a Democratic and prosperous Colombia” at PKU
Peking University, May 10, 2012: Led by Sr. Juan Manuel Santos Calderón, President of the Republic of Colombia, a Colombian delegation paid a visit to Peking University and gave a lecture on “To a Democratic and Prosperous Colombia” on May 9, 2012.
President Santos kicked off his five-day state visit to China on Tuesday, May 8 and PKU visit was an important activity on his agenda.
Zhou Qifeng, President of PKU, welcomed the delegation at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU, other PKU professors and students and Colombian overseas students presented at the event.
Zhou introduced the overview of PKU and pointed out that China and Colombia have built up a stable and good relationship over the past 32 years. As one of the most famous universities, PKU has attracted numerous overseas students across the world including Colombia. Zhou attached great importance to this visit in strengthening the exchange between two parties, “I hope we will have more chance to cooperate, which will definitely benefit both sides”, said Zhou.
In his address, President Santos demonstrated that Colombia had made great progress in safety, employment and poverty-eliminating since he took office as President. “China and Colombia are two emerging economies and we could join forces for mutually benefit development and create a new world economic order”, he expected both countries would strengthen the cooperation in areas including economy, trade, investment and agriculture.
“Colombia will play a more active role in promoting China’s relations with Latin America”, he added.
Talking about education, he called for more cultural exchange between two parties and welcomed more professors and students to teach Chinese and learn Spanish in Colombia.
Afterwards, President Santos donated 250 Spanish books to PKU and President Zhou presented PKU souvenirs to Santos.
Juan Manuel Santos Calderón is a colombian politician who has been the President of Colombia since 7 August 2010.
Juan Manuel Santos has been Chief Executive of the Colombian Coffee Delegation to the International Coffee Organization in London and Sub-Director of his family owned newspaper El Tiempo. He was Minister of Foreign Trade during the administration of President César Gaviria in 1991. In 1992 he was appointed President of the VII United Nations Conference on Trade and Development for a period of four years.
In 1994 Juan Manuel Santos founded the Good Government Foundation, whose stated objective was helping and improving the governability and efficiency of the Colombian Government. This organization presented a proposal for a demilitarized zone and peace talks with the FARC guerrilla group.
