Guangzhou and PKU Co-found AVS Industrialization Center
Peking University, Beijing, Jun 4, 2009: On the morning of June 3, Guangzhou and Peking University (PKU) signed an agreement to co-found the Guangzhou Research Development and Industrialization Center of Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS) National Engineering Laboratory at Guangzhou University Town. They aim at setting up a comprehensive digital media industry chain covering chip and software design, overall machine design and manufacture, and media production and operation. Zhang Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou, Xu Zhibiao, Vice-Mayor of Guangzhou, and Prof. Yue Sulan, Vice-President of PKU attended the signing ceremony.
The AVS, owning independent Chinese intellectual property rights, is an important foundation for the strengthening of China’s digital audio-video industry. Recently, Guangzhou has opened the first testing channel of AVS High Definition Digital TV and applied it in 20 provinces and cities, which has accelerated the process of industrialization.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Xu Zhibiao wished that the AVS could form a comprehensive digital media industry chain covering chip and software design, overall machine design and manufacture, and media production and operation, and play an important role in Digital Home industry through the cooperation of the two sides. The government of Guangzhou will provide policy and financial support. By setting up industrial incubator for AVS, and assembling companies on AVS research, design, testing, operation, sales and service, they want to apply AVS to not only digital TV but also other Digitized Terminals including computers, mobile phones, and Personal Digital Assistants.
