Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks awarded PKU Honorary Professor

Peking University, December 14, 2014: On November 7th, Nicholas B. Dirks, Chancellor of University of California, Berkeley visited Peking University and was awarded PKU Honorary Professor. PKU President Wang Enge attended the award ceremony.

President Wang Enge praised Chancellor Dirks as the reformer of higher education, who has made substantial contribution to the development of undergraduate education, interdisciplinary projects and new globalized universities. President Wang reviewed the exchange between UC Berkeley and PKU. Dating back to the 1980s, the cooperation of the two universities has initiated and achieved fruitful results. PKU looks forward to a deeper cooperation with UC Berkeley in the future.

Then Professor Nicholas B. Dirks delivered a speech entitled “Autobiography of an Archive: History, Anthropology and India”, during which he referred to the researching methods of anthropology and shared his experience in studying South Asia under British colonial rule.

After the ceremony, Professor Zhu Shanlu, chairman of Peking University Council, received Chancellor Dirks and the delegation at Linhuxuan. Professor Zhu congratulated Chancellor Dirks for the award. He said UC Berkeley plays a key role in many fields and has a long-term cooperation with PKU. They finally achieved a consensus of deeper collaboration in establishing the large data processing platform and facing the challenges in science and technology, social science and policy research.
