PKU participates in the 10th Sino-Japanese University Presidents Forum

Peking University, November 2, 2017: The 10th Sino-Japanese University Presidents Forum was held in Shenyang from October 20 to 21, themed “Development of Sino-Japanese Universities: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future.”  PKU Vice President Gong Qihuang attended the forum and co-chaired the opening ceremony with Masashi Haneda, vice president of The University of Tokyo. Organized by Northeastern University (China), the forum invited representatives from Chinese and Japanese universities as well as those from government organizations and academic institutions.

At the opening ceremony, Matsuo Taiki, MEXT’s (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) minister's secretariat, Ying Zhongyuan, director of Liaoning Foreign Affairs Office and Ishizuka Hideki, consul general of Japanese Consulate delivered a speech respectively.

During the Forum, representatives from China and Japan focused on the future development of higher education and exchanged ideas on two topics—“the reform and innovation in the mode of higher education” and “college’s function in preparing students for meeting challenges in career development.” 
Synchronized with the Presidents Forum, the Student Forum, composed of over 40 student representatives, discussed extensively on topics like artificial intelligence and innovative business. Yao Siyu, a student of School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science from PKU, attended this forum on behalf of PKU.

Gong Qihuang was present during the meeting and delivered a speech at the closing dinner. He indicated that thanks to both sides’ sincere consultations and persistent endeavours, the forum achieved a tremendous development. This cooperation contributed to the prosperity and stability of not merely Sino-Japanese relations but the entire Asia. The forum reached its consummation in amicable exchanges between the two countries’ representatives.

In October 2010, the first Sino-Japanese University Principal Forum was co-initiated by PKU and UTokyo, and held every two years thereafter. This year marks the 17th anniversary of the forum and the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese relationship. China and Japan with joined hands promote the development of education in both countries with the forum serving as an important platform for exchanges. The 11th Sino-Japanese University Presidents Forum is to be held at Waseda University in 2019.
