Chinese Premier Li Keqiang presents PKU album to alumnus Ethiopian President

Peking University, May 13, 2014: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met Ethiopian Presdient Mulatu Teshome in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 6th 2014, Xinhua reported.

As both leaders have studied at PKU, Premier Li said it felt especially cordial meeting the alumnus. Noting that Mulatu once studied and worked in China, Li expressed China's highly appreciation of the president's long-standing, important contribution to the development of China-Ethiopia and China-Africa relations, according to Xinhua.

Premier Li Keqiang and President Mulatu were PKU alumni in the same period. President Mulatu entered the Department of Philosophy, PKU in 1978. In the same year, Li Keqiang entered the School of Law and became the leader of the Students' Union on campus. In July 1982, they both received their bachelor's degrees after four years of studies at PKU. After graduation, Li Keqiang served as secretary of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) committee of PKU while Mulatu returned to his homeland and worked in Ethiopia. Two years later in 1984, Mulatu came back to PKU to study international politics and graduated with his doctorate degree in 1991. On the other side, Li Keqiang also continued his studies at PKU in 1988 and earned his master's and doctorate degrees in economics. In 2013, the two schoolmates were elected as the Chinese premier and the Ethiopian president respectively. And Ethiopia was the first African country that Premier Li Keqiang visited after his inaugural.

During their meeting on May 6th, Premier Li sent President Mulatu a special album of PKU as a unique diplomatic gift. Published by Peking University Press, the album is a rich collection of photography works of the university, including the landscape, history, education and campus life, etc. PKU President Wang Enge, Mulatu's tutor Professor Lou Yulie from the Department of Philosophy, Mulatu's classmate and friend Mr. Petra Kolonko, and some other PKU professors and administrators signed on this album.
