ANU President Brian Schmidt visits Peking University

Peking University, Oct. 23, 2016: Professor Brian Schmidt, president of the Australian National University (ANU), came to Peking University (PKU) with his visiting delegation. The President of Peking University, Lin Jianhua, and Vice President Wang Jie, warmly welcomed them in Linhuxuan. During the meeting, some serious topics such as education cooperation programs between these two prestigious universities and campus management, were put into deep discussion. Additionally, the delegation had separated meetings  with the College of Engineering, Office of Scientific Research, and School of Software & Microelectronics for potential possibilities of further cooperation. 

President Lin recognized that PKU has a long-running good cooperation  with ANU, including the operation of joint doctorate plans. Lin expected that this model will spread into more faculties and benefit more students from both universities.
President Schmidt, concurring with the idea of improving cross-school collaborations, maintained that ANU would definitely attach more importance to the research of fundamental sciences and innovation. He hoped that scholars and students will contribute to social development in the future.
After comprehensive communications and discussions in the areas of educational cooperation and campus management, the final consensus reached at the meeting was remarkable. There is no doubt that PKU and ANU will keep their friendship and collaboration on the right track and together, strive for a brighter future.
After the meeting, President Schmidt delivered a passionate speech on the topic of “Education and Academic Cooperation between Australia and China”, to PKU faculties and students, which covered the history of Sino-Australian educational collaboration, the current situation and future  challenges.

Just as Schmidt said in his speech:”Geographically, Australia is the closest western country around China”, Sino-Australian relationship has lasted for more than half a century. Under the trend of globalization, the communication and cooperation between ANU and PKU are definitely of great significance, not only for now, but also for the future.
