President of the University of Hong Kong visits Peking University

Peking University, May 2: On April 21st, PKU President Lin Jianhua met the delegation of  the University of Hong Kong (HKU), led by President Peter Mathieson. HKU delegation visited Peking University to promote more substantial exchanges and cooperation between the two universities.

During the meeting, Lin Jianhua and Peter Mathieson briefly reviewed the progress on talent training and research cooperation and many other areas in recent years, and heard reports on cooperation on college level between the two universites. Lin Jianhua fully affirmed the progress and achievements, and expressed his hope for further cooperation in wider areas.

Peter Mathieson said that the two universities had been keeping long-term positive exchanges and cooperation. He believed that HKU and PKU would make more progress on the basis of strengthened communication and enhanced mutual understanding.


Lin Jianhua and Peter Mathieson then renewed the undergraduate exchange agreement and exchanged presents.

After the meeting, Peter Mathieson gave an interview to PKU student reporters and exchanged ideas on strategy of world-class university development. The delegation then separately visited School of Government, Guanghua School of Management, Department of Sociology, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences and School of International Studies (Institute of Afro-Asian Studies). Delegates from colleges and departments of engineering, science and architecture of the two universities also held joint discussions. Besides, PKU School of Government and HKU Faculty of Social Sciences signed the Memorandum of Understanding on MPA double degree program.

Later, Mr. Mathieson and the delegation went to Peking University Health Science Center. He signed the standardized trainee cooperation agreements between Peking University Health Science Center and HKU Shenzhen Hospital.

Background Info:
Professor Peter Mathieson is an English nephrologist and the fifteenth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and assumed office in April 2014.

He was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge in 1992. Peter was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999 and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol in 2008. Peking University is the first mainland university he visited after he assumed office and this is his second visit to PKU.
