Nancy Pelosi Visits Peking University

Peking University, Nov. 19, 2015: On November 13, 2015, the Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi led a delegation of congressional Democrats on a visit to Peking University (PKU).
 
Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU,  and representatives of professors and students received the guests at the Hall of the School of Chinese as a Second Language and exchanged gifts with the delegation.

Professor Yuan Ming from School of International Studies extended a warm welcome to the delegation, and recollected her encounter with Pelosi in the U.S. 20 years ago. After the introduction of the members of the delegation, Pelosi pointed out that the communication between the youth of China and the United States is of critical importance to the development of the two countries, and that she is willing to listen to the voices of the younger generation and to answer their questions.
 
The discussion centeredon issues of global environment. Professor Zhang Haibin from the School of International Studies and the students commented and posted questions on the issues of climate change and the U.S. government’s reactions, the Sino-US cooperation on protecting the global environment, the differences between how developing countries and developed countries react to environmental issues, as well as the upcoming 21st annual Conference of the Parties (COP21) to be held in Paris. Pelosi, together with the delegation, responded to the comments and questions.
 
Pelosi stated that the climate change is an issue of global significance, and the leadership of China and the U.S. are vital to the protection of the global environment. Speaking highly of China’s contribution in recent years, she added that the United States would also strive to promote global environmental management, in particular, the development in the related research fields. She expressed full confidence in the Sino-US cooperation on environmental protection.

Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi, a member of the Democratic Party, is the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives and served as the 52ndSpeaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. She is the only woman to have served as the House Speaker and to date is the highest-ranking female politician in American history.
