Vladimir Yakunin visits Peking University and delivers a keynote speech at Beijing Forum

Peking University, Nov.29, 2015: On the afternoon of November 5, 2015, invited by Beijing Forum and China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin, the founding chairman of the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations" and the former president of the Russian railway company pays a visit to Peking University. Guests are welcomed in the meeting room by vice president of Peking University Li Yansong and vice chairman of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation Qi Mingqiu, and the two sides discuss the possibility of building cooperation between Beijing Forum and the World Public Forum.

After the meeting, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin gives a speech in the School of Foreign Language of Peking University. The next evening, he attends the dinner party of Beijing Forum and delivers a keynote speech, emphasizing the significant function of the conversation between cultures which ensures success of international cooperation.

In the School of Foreign Language of Peking University, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin introduces the development of the World Public Forum. He talks about the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Leonid Hurwicz, who wins the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. By giving these two examples, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin explains the relationship between the development of modern economy and social construction. He says in modern time, the interaction between civilizations tends to result in one’s triumph over another. On the contrary, the World Public Forum is committed to developing a general civilization of human beings and promoting the development of different national cultures, thus making every nation have its own identity.

In his keynote speech delivered at the dinner party of Beijing Forum, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin analyzes the conflict and crisis confronting society, and points out that the global order loses its balance and the state of civilization is in chaos. Then he explains his motivation for establishing the World Public Forum and the meaning of the conversation between civilizations. He says that the World Public Forum has been encouraging and supporting multi-perspectives of viewing the world since its establishment. He appeals for a natural way of development in which different civilizations exist together and hopes different civilizations can promote and learn from each other so that a world picture where everything is inclusive can be achieved eventually.

In addition, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin briefly introduces the daily work of the World Public Forum. He says in order to put into practice the conception of “stable development” propounded by the UN, the World Public Forum sets out to make a “cultural map of the world” so as to offer help for the intellectual construction of reflecting on the present.

At the end of his speech, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin quotes Russian President Putin as saying that a crucial task of international society led by the UN is to guarantee the regional and global peace and stability. He also hopes scholars can communicate with each other equally.
