2015 PKU National Model UN opens

Peking University, Apr. 1, 2015: On March 26th, the opening ceremony of 2015 PKU National Model United Nations Conference was held in Sunshine Hall of Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center in Peking University.

Aiming at motivating the generation, the four-day conference attracted nearly 800 representatives from more than one hundred middle schools all over China. Representatives, acting as diplomats, ambassadors and journalists from over ten different committees, such as the United Nations Security Council, European Economic and Social Committee, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, etc., had a heated discussion over international issues, including airplane crash rescue, energy consumption, continental shelf of the North Sea and the Gulf War.

 
The Opening Ceremony
 

Ambassador Mohamed Faisal from the Republic of Maldives Embassy to China expressed sincere appreciation for PKU holding such event. He expressed his expectations that student representatives should not only have a clear knowledge of the current global politics, economy, relations between nations and demands for equality among nations, but also they should bear in mind that all countries, despite their sovereign size and national strength, are entitled with the right to pursue independency and have their voice heard on the international stage.

Yan Liang, head of Secretariat from UNA-China, pointed out that international structure was experiencing a profound and complex transformation and that he was glad PKU Model United Nations brought excellent students together, and made great contributions to the further settlement of international issues. He promised that UNA-China will continually offer support and help to such event.

The Vice President of PKU Youth League Committee, Wang Yiming appreciated the hard work of the organizing committee in the past one year, and he was glad to see the development of PKU Model UN year by year. Most importantly, he was delighted that such activity could offer a precious chance for every participant to put what they have learned into practice and broaden their horizon as well.

Professor Wang Yizhou, President of School of International Studies, an executive member of UNA-China, summarized the profound influence of Model UN, saying that Model UN can be a preparation for the real one. Secretary-general of Model UN Du Jinyu reviewed the reformation and development of Model UN in the past ten years, including expanding in size, the difficult exploration in academic field and constant innovations. He hoped that the conference could serve as a stage by which the students participants could pursue a bright future and realize their ambitions.
