EECS research team granted funding from Samsung GRO program
Nov 07, 2012

Peking University, Sept. 10, 2012: Recently the winners of the 2012 Samsung Global Research Outreach (GRO) program were revealed, among which is a Peking University (PKU) student research team from the Department of Microelectronics, School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, led by Professor Zhang Haixia.

Their winning proposal is named “Design, Simulation and Fabrication of A Spiral-Shaped Multi-mass PVDF Cantilever”, the new structure of which, crafted using MEMS technology, can be applied to produce a high-performance “Low-frequency Ultra-wide Bandwidth Piezoelectric Energy Harvester. ”

Much to their delight, this is the first time that this research team has received a grant from an organization abroad. They worked hard to come up with a viable solution and write a thorough proposal in English before having to defend their idea in July when asked to demonstrate its originality and necessity in a letter from Samsung China.

The Samsung GRO program, open to leading universities around the world, is Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd. & related Samsung companies (SAMSUNG)'s annual call for research proposals. Selected proposals will receive financial support for one year ranging from $50,000 (USD) to $100,000, based on the research results and internal needs, the GRO partnership of which may be renewed for up to three years. The topics cover many frontiers of science and technology, including but not limited to information technology, new materials, energy, medical treatment, biology.

Three teams among the 71 winners come from China: Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Qingdao Institute of CAS, and PKU. Many winning teams are from leading universities around the world such as MIT, Stanford University, Harvard University and University of Oxford. For the next 12 months, they will have to work hard to prove they are worthy of the grant.
