PKU School of Transnational Law wins championship in China Division of Jessup

Peking University, Mar. 1, 2013: The 11th Jessup, China Division was held from Feburary 25 to 28 at Renmin University of China. Representatives from PKU School of Transnational Law excelled among altogether 39 teams and crowned themselves. In addition, the two indictments on behalf of the plaintiff and defendant composed by PKU team were elected the best in the whole competition. Zhou Yu and Han Xiangmei from PKU School of Transnational Law were awarded the “Best Debaters”.

                              

39 teams participated in this selection contest of the China Division, including representatives from Peking University, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, Xiamen University, etc. A wide range of issues were discussed, concerning sinking countries, stateless migrants, lease of territory, etc. To compete in Jessup, all teams are required to submit pleadings and debate on certain cases using English as the working language with a thorough analysis and research in advance. The four representatives from PKU defeated their strong opponents such as China Foreign Affairs University, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in semi-finals, and took the crown by outperforming Xiamen University in the final, obtaining 7 victories in total.

The annual “Phillip C. Jessup” is a law debating competition worldwide. Initiated by Harvard University and then passed on to International Law Students Association, this competition has a history of almost 50 years, attracting more than 800 universities from 100 countries to participate in. It is recognized as the largest and most time-honored professional debating competition.

 

From March 31 to April 6, PKU School of Transnational Law representatives will go to Washington to fight for the world’s champion and exchange with law school students from other parts of the world.
