EECS PhD candidate wins Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship 2012

Peking University, Oct. 25, 2012: Zhao Xin, a PhD student from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Peking University (PKU), has recently won the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship 2012, which continued EECS’s winning record to ten years in a row.

 

Zhao was admitted to EECS’s master-doctorate program in September 2008, who has ever since focused on online text mining. Due to his in-depth academic achievements, including 13 papers on international conferences, he has received PKU’s "Wu Si Scholarship" and "Model Student" honor.

 

Since Microsoft Research Asia started to accept applications for the 2012 Fellowship, it has attracted 94 excellent PhD students from 45 top universities covering Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Singapore. This year’s applicants faced stricter election process and more intense competition. Finally, Zhao and other 9 outstanding students were awarded.

The Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) Fellowship Program aims to recognize outstanding junior PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to facilitate and empower the future growth of junior PhD students majoring in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Science, or Applied Mathematics, who have the potential to become future research leaders.

 

The program began in 1999, and since then it has attracted around 753 PhD candidates from 48 universities in the Asia-Pacific region. From its inception to 2010, 312 outstanding PhD students have been awarded Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship honors or scholarship.
