Tripartite forum held at PKU for doctorate Japanese research
Apr 01, 2012

Peking University, Mar. 25, 2012: On March 17, the sixth Japan Forum of PhDs from Peking University (PKU), Nankai University and Fudan University was successfully held at PKU by the respective Japan Research Centers of the three universities.

Against the background of the 40th anniversary of the formalization of Sino-Japanese relations, the bilateral ties has undergone the honeymoon period in the 1980s, the turning period in the 1990s, and the severity period at the beginning of the 21st century. Despite the frequent economic and cultural contacts as well as the staff exchanges between the two countries, discrepancies and disagreements are hard to avoid. That’s why researchers of Sino-Japanese relations are both optimistic in future co-operations and pessimistic in unpredictable interest conflicts — due to some historical and realistic misunderstandings. As a result of the uncertainties above, in-depth researches are necessary in political, economic, cultural and social arenas. For this reason, the theme of this Forum was Sino-Japanese Relations after 1970s: Development, Experience, and Understanding.

The opening ceremony of the Forum was hosted by Professor Li Hanmei, director of PKU Modern Japan Research Center. More than thirty PhD candidates from the three universities were present, with twelve gave key-note speeches on political, economic, social, cultural and energy issues.

The Forum was first initiated by PKU and Nankai in 2007, and Fudan joined in March 2009. Since then, it is held in turn by the three universities annually. Up till now, 72 papers and four editions of Wei Ming: Japan Studies have been published. With joint efforts, the Forum will be an influential research platform for young researchers across China.
