Nature Chemistry publishes research by Liu Zhongfan-Peng Hailin Team
Mar 10, 2012

Peking University, Mar. 9, 2012: Topological insulator is a brand-new material of quantum function. It behaves as an insulator in its interior or bulk, while permitting the movement of charges (metallic) on its surface. It normally appears as massless Dirac fermion. Due to the stability of the two-dimension electron gas formed on its surface and protected by its topological structure, it is rarely influenced by impurities or disorder. For this reason, it has wide applications in quantum and spinning devices.

The Liu Zhongfan - Peng Hailin Research Team from Peking University (PKU) has proposed and realized a method called “Van der Waals Extension” to produce flexible, transparent and conductive films based on slim slices of topological insulators in nanometer. They are the first to produce slim slices of Bi2Se3 in nanometer with large quantity and high quality on flexible, transparent and conductive Mica substrate vapor phase epitaxy, and discover the qualities of transparency near infra-red areas, conductivity, and high anti-disturbance capability. This discovery demonstrates the possibility of manufacturing and producing transparent and flexible photoelectric elements, which are of high value in the application of photo-electronics and nano-electronics.

The above research result was published on Nature Chemistry with the name H. Peng, Z. F. Liu, et al., Topological Insulator Nanostructures for Near-infrared Transparent Flexible Electrodes, doi:10.1038/nchem.1277 . No sooner was the article published on-line than SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory of the US interviewed the researchers, that includinge Professor Shen Zhixun of Stanford University and Professor Chen Yulin of the Oxford University of Oxford--- -- the former is PKU’s visiting professor of Peking University, and an authoritarian expert in on energy and material research, as well as the chief scientist of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory of the US.

This research also gained support from China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Science Foundation Committee, and the Ministry of Education.
