Lui Che-woo Donates 120 Million RMB to Boost the Development of the School of Life Sciences

Peking University, Nov. 10, 2017: On November 8, Dr. Lui Che-woo announced that he will donate 120 million yuan to Peking University. The donation and signing ceremony was held in Hong Kong. Professor Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, and Professor Wang Bo, vice chairman of PKU Education Foundation, on behalf of Peking University and PKU Education Foundation, signed a donation agreement with Dr. Lui and awarded him "Peking University Outstanding Education Contribution Award".

 
The 120 million yuan were all donated to the School of Life Sciences to establish the “Lui Che-woo Life Science Fund”, and to build a new research building of the school entitled “Lui Che-woo Building”.
 
“Lui Che-woo Building” will be completed and put into use in early 2018, which will also start a prelude to the 120th anniversary of Peking University. With seven floors and a total gross floor area of ??26,900 square meters, the building functions as a high-end equipment platform that provides vital conditions for life science research. It is in line with the largest scientific experimental platform that China is trying to build – the protein science research platform (also known as "Phoenix Project"). It will have incomparable roles and significance in the development of frontier sciences such as life, cognition and health sciences.

In his speech, Lui said: "To support education and scientific research to the best of my ability is the goal of my decades of dedication. I am deeply honored and proud to support the construction of Peking University Life Science research building. I hope I can, by this opportunity, encourage higher education institutions in China to carry out researches of more profound significance and innovation and to foster more scientific talents in China and the world for the benefit of the future of humanity."


President Lin said, “There has never been a university so closely linked to the fate of a nation such as Peking University. It’s not only Peking University that you support, but also the nation and the future. Today, Dr. Lui will help us build a first-class life science building. He vigorously promotes the cultivation of life science talents and scientific research. His donation is definitely a precious gift for the 120th anniversary of Peking University.”


Professor Wu Hong, dean of the School of Life Sciences, said: “Peking University School of Life Sciences is the most comprehensive scientific research institution in China's life science field. The construction of Lui Che-woo Building will support the school in leading the life sciences in China and the world in the future. Thank Dr. Lui for helping Peking University to accomplish its dream!”


Background Information:

Lui Che-woo is the founder and chairman of K. Wah Group and director of LUI Che Woo Charity. As a business leader, Lui has been particularly enthusiastic about higher and basic education. In his Lui Che-woo Award of 2018, he added illiteracy elimination as a field to focus on to promote the sustainable development of China's education.
