Peking University, Sept. 13, 2017: International Insurance Society (IIS) recently announced the first higher education institutions which acquired the authentication of “Global Centers of Insurance Excellence” (GCIE). Risk Management and Insurance Department of School of Economics, Peking University, was selected and finally provided the international GCIE authentication.
GCIE is an international authentication project launched by IIS in 2017 towards risk management and insurance department of all higher education institutions, in order to comprehensively evaluate and authenticate the development of such departments. IIS has established an evaluation committee made up by world-famous scholars in the professional field. After the strict review of the committee, 20 universities around the world got the first GCIE international authentication. Among these universities, 12 of them locate in the United State; China and Belgium each has two; Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland each has one. According to the information, the period of validity of GCIE international authentication is five-year, and the selected participants need to be reevaluated after five years.
Risk Management and Insurance Department of Peking University was established in 1993. Being one of the first five insurance major in higher education institutions that ratified by the Ministry of Education, the history of the department can be traced back to the Insurance Department of Peking University, 1912. Risk Management and Insurance Department has been sticking to the spirit of Peking University: “patriotism, progress, democracy, and science”, and the ideal of School of Economics: “govern the world and benefit the people”, and has dedicated to teaching, research, cultivation of talents and social service in the fields of insurance, risk management, actuarial science and social security. The department has won awards of featured specialty both on city and national level.
Also, the professional courses of the department have been awarded as excellent courses, and the textbooks have been chosen as nation-wide higher educational teaching materials for multiple times. In 2014, Peking University established the doctorial course of risk management and insurance and the master project of insurance major, completing the system of the subject. Faculty members of the department, like Professor Sun Qixiang, are serving as chief experts in national social science projects and the project of key subjects in philosophy and social science research launched by the Ministry of Education. They have also achieved various awards of IIS and posted many significant papers in top academic periodicals both home and aboard. Students of the department also have great performance in professional competitions both inside and outside the campus. Graduates of the department are making contributions to economic and social construction by using their professional knowledge in various fields around the world.
Acquiring the GCIE international authentication is a new impetus for the development of Risk Management and Insurance Department of Peking University, provides the department with broader international platform, and also makes higher requirements to the progress of the subject. All faculties and students of Risk Management and Insurance Department are going to stick to their ideals and dreams, overcome coming difficulties and make their professional contributions to the undertaking of building a world-class university.
