Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg delivers a speech at Peking University

Peking University, Apr. 11, 2017:  Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg is paying an official visit to China from April 7 to April 11 at the invitation of Premier Li Keqiang. On the morning of April 10, 2017, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited Peking University with Svein Ole Sæther, Norwegian ambassador to China. She gave a speech on sustainable development at the Sunshine Hall of the Yingjie Exchange Center of Peking University, and answered questions raised by student audiences.

Before the speech, Hao Ping, chair of the Peking University Council, and Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, along with Li Yansong, vice president of Peking University met with Prime Minister Erna Solberg and her delegation in the VIP room of the Yingjie Exchange Center. Hao Ping, on behalf of the school, warmly welcomed their visit. He noted that Peking University and Norway had a very good cooperation in higher education, and the Prime Minister's visit would deepen the cooperation between the universities of two countries. Erna Solberg said that cultural exchanges and the understanding of each other's culture were essential in the cooperation. Subsequently, Erna Solberg went to theSunshine Hall of the Yingjie Exchange Center to deliver the speech.

At the very beginning, president Lin Jianhua gave a welcome speech. “Since the beginning of this century, the scientific cooperation between China and Norway has been elevated to a new stage. Establishing a positive and comprehensive connection on global scale plays an important role in enhancing mutual trust, solving global problems and promoting civilization. Peking University is also committed to fostering a new generation of global leaders. I hope everyone will work together to build a better world,” said Lin Jianhua.

Later, Elna Solberg gave a speech entitled "Sustainable Development - Making Globalization Workfor Peopleandthe Planet". In the speech, she mentioned the vital role Chinaplayed in global knowledge production, and that PKU, as an important partner of Norway's higher education and scientific research, had made significant contributions to the development of global science. For addressing issues about globalization and human society, Erna Solberg believed that countries shall work together to manage globalization: firstly, implementing the 2030 agenda adopted by UN as well as achieving17 Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs), and figuring out how to achieve these goalsbyeducation; secondly, encouraging innovation and innovative partnerships, and managing globalization in a good way. Besides, she noted that Norway and China shall strengthen the cooperation in climate and environment, polar studies, aquaculture, energy, agriculture and social sciences to jointly promote the achievement of the UN sustainable development goals. Finally, Erna Solberg pointed out that the younger generation as a reformer shall play a greater role in the challenges of globalization.
 
After the speech, Erna Solberg answered questions raised by student audiences, and met with students majoring Norwegian from Beijing Foreign Studies University.
