Beida delegation visits Hong Kong, Macao
Jun 09, 2013

Peking University, June 6, 2013: Peking University (PKU/Beida) should take over the flag of forerunners and take every step steadily in the course of building a world-class university, urged a top administrator.

“On the university’s 20th anniversary, Cai Yuanpei, then president of the Government University of Peking, expressed his strong desire to see the university’s parallel development with topnotch ones such as Berlin and Leipzig universities. However, since the whole nation was at a standstill, this dream had not been realized,” said Peking University Council Chairman Zhu Shanlu during a PKU delegation’s visit to Hong Kong.

“Now that 95 years have passed, Peking University should answer to the request of pioneer Beida people like President Cai.”

Speaking at the 10th Peking University Political, Economic, and Cultural Salon on May 27, Professor Zhu, head of the delegation, briefed the Hong Kong audience on the Beida 2048 plan.

“Peking University strives to become the best university around 2048, its 150th anniversary that coincides as well with the centennial of New China,” said Zhu, “a world-class university with both distinctive Chinese characteristics and Beida style and features; a university that can earn recognition and self-esteem in the world on behalf of China and the Chinese nation.”

In order to further strengthen the exchange and cooperation with universities in Hong Kong and Macao and enhance communication with personages of all circles, the PKU delegation made a working visit to the two special administrative regions. The university signed cooperation framework agreements on health sciences and student exchange with the University of Macau and Chinese University of Hong Kong respectively.

The delegation specially paid respect to the tomb of late President Cai Yuanpei (in office: 1916-1927) in Hong Kong.

President Cai (1863-1940) is regarded as the most significant reformer in the history of Peking University because of his principle: freedom of thoughts, and an all-embracing attitude (Sixiang ziyou, jianrong bingbao), now core values of the university.

During the visit, the delegation also paid a courtesy call to the Liaison Offices of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong and Macao SARs, and to Chief Executives Leung Chun-ying and Fernando Chui Sai On. They exchanged views and reached consensus in promoting each other’s education, academic, and cultural cooperation.

“Peking University will take the advantage of its academic disciplines and talents, continue to cooperate with Hong Kong and Macao, and actively promote and enrich the ‘one country two systems’ practice,” said Professor Zhu. “We will carry out all kinds of researches, bringing out suggestions for the economic, social development and long-term prosperity and stability“ of the two SARs.
