Peking University, Feb. 12, 2017: Professor Zhang Dongxiao, dean of the College of Engineering, Peking University (PKU), is among the 84 new members and 22 foreign associates elected today to the U.S.National Academy of Engineering.
Election to the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."
Professor Zhang Dongxiao is currently dean of the College of Engineering and director of Institute of Ocean Research at PKU. He is an internationally well-known expert in groundwater hydrology, unconventional oil and gas production, and geological carbon sequestration. After having held positions as Chair Professor at the University of Southern California, Miller Chair Professor at the Department of Petroleum and Geological Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, and Senior Scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he was involved in establishing the PKU College of Engineering since 2005 and joined the PKU engineering full time in 2010. Zhang is elected to NAE “for pioneering work in stochastic modeling of flow in porous media”.
Founded in 1964, the NAE is part of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an independent, nonprofit organization chartered by Congress to provide objective analysis and advice to the nation on matters of science, technology, and health.The NAE’s mission is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology in the U.S.
