The Second Forum on Chinese Culture inaugurated at PKU

Peking University, Nov. 29, 2016: On November 22, 2016, the 2nd Chinese Culture Forum was inaugurated at Yingjie Exchange Center, Peking University. It was hosted by Peking University and organized by Peking University Taiwan Research Institute.

Revolving around the theme of “the preservation and innovation of the Chinese culture“, leaders and guests including Yan Junqi, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of Central Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party, Zhang Zhijun, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the CPC Central Committee, Cai Wu, former minister of the Ministry of Culture, Wang Yifu, president of the All-China Taiwanese Association, Hu Zhiqiang, vice chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang, and Zhu Shanlu, chairman of the Peking University Council attended the opening ceremony.


The opening ceremony was presided over by Wang Bo, assistant president of Peking University. More than 300 Scholars from the mainland, Taiwan and HongKong joined the forum.

Zhang Zhijun expressed the hope that the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straitshould jointly safeguard and build up traditional Chinese culture. He said that outstanding traditional culture of China was the most profound cultural soft power of the Chinese nation and the cross-strait economic and social development results could not be separated from the foundation of Chinese culture. In today's China, it’s necessary for us to maintain and revitalize Chinese culture together. On one hand, we should preserve and inherit our traditional culture. On the other hand, we should put time connotation into it by developing it in an innovative and creative way.

"My ancestors used to live in Shandong and then broke through the East to the northeast." Hu Zhiqiang talked about his ancestral home on taking the stage. He said that although the situation in Taiwan has changed this year, the interaction and exchanges are not decreasing but increasing, and the impact and speed of cross-strait exchanges will also increase. Strengthening cross-strait interaction will benefit compatriots on both sides. He said, "Chinese culture is profound and cannot be taken lightly, and the basic values of culture should be improved in modern society. For example, the culture of respecting the elderly is a traditional Chinese culture. I hope in the future when foreigners speak of filial piety, they will speak ‘Xiaoshun‘, just as ‘Taiji’”.

On behalf of Hao Pin, deputy minister of the Ministry of Education, LiuJin, director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Education said, “Peking University is the center for the transmission of traditional Chinese culture. Today, scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have gathered together to discuss the innovation and preservation of Chinese culture. We hope to jointly inherit and carry forward the Chinese culture, collect the wisdom of the compatriots on both sides of the strait and add new spiritual wealth for the protection of Chinese culture. We look forward to persevering efforts to promote cross-strait peaceful development, promote the prosperity of Chinese culture and achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

Zhu Shanlu noted in the opening speech, "The role of scholars penetrates all areas of people's lives, including politics, military, economics and international relations. The light of their wisdom should illuminate our path. Although different from entrepreneurs and military strategists, it is for the efforts and struggles of scholars that the lighthouse of human wisdom perpetually stand. Today the world, including China, is at a major turning point. We need not only wise politicians to unite us and to lead the way forward, but also the efforts of scholars to make contribution to the the harmonious development of both sides of the strait."

Under the strong support of the Taiwan Affairs Office, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and other units, Peking University held the 2nd Chinese Culture Forum from November 22 to 23 this year. More than 100 Taiwanese scholars attended the forum, signifying that the Chinese Culture Forum has become an important platform for cross-strait cultural exchange and communication under the currently critical situation.
