Xiaoliang Sunney Xie elected new member of National Academy of Medicine, USA

Peking University, Oct. 18, 2016: Xiaoliang Sunney Xie, Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University and the Yangtze River Chaired professor at Peking University, was elected a new member of National Academy of Medicine, USA on October 17, 2016 (US local time).
 

Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. “These newly elected members are outstanding professionals who care deeply about advancing health and health care in the U.S. and globally,” said National Academy of Medicine President Victor J. Dzau.  “Their expertise will help our organization address pressing health challenges and improve health, science, and medicine for the benefit of us all.”  Until now, Professor Xie is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
 
The National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Established originally as the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences,the National Academy of Medicine addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy and inspires positive actions across sectors.  There are currently 1947 active members and 146 foreign members in the National Academy of Medicine. 

Xie was born in 1962 when his father XieYouchang and mother Yang Junying were both professors in College of Chemistry at Peking University. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree at Peking University, later got his doctor’s degree at University of California-San Diego in 1990. He became a professor in 1999 at Harvard University and also has fellowship at Peking University in recent years.
 
Professor Xie has made outstanding contributions in the field of single molecular biophysics and biomedical optical imaging. “I’m very happy that Xie was elected as member of the National Academy of Medicine. Because his recent work in China, especially in single-cell sequencing of medical applications has fundamental effects in medical sciences, which was added to his previous excellent work of imaging”, said a scholar at Peking University.
