Professor Dong Qiang elected as a Correspondent by the ASMP

Peking University, October 25, 2016: Recently, professor Dong Qiang, chair of the Department of French Language and Literature at Peking University, was formally informed that he has been elected as a Correspondent by the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques (ASMP), becoming the first Chinese Associate Member of the Academy in the past 200 years.
 
The ASMP was founded in 1795. It is one of the five academies of the Institut de France, which is on a par with the British Royal Society, known as one of the oldest and best-known academies worldwide. The Academy encompasses prominent figures worldwide in various fields, including politics, economics, international relations and religious studies. Renowned Fellows of the Institut de France include Henri Bergson, a well-known philosopher and the winner of 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature; Adolphe Thiers, a famous statesman and historian, an important figure in French history; Jules Michelet, a great French historian, as well as Alexis de Tocqueville, whose works Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution have exerted significant influence on China.
 
Traditionally, Correspondents of the ASMP are foreigners. Like Fellows, the tenure of Correspondent is lifelong. The position can only be filled on the condition that another Corresponding Member passes away.
 
Professor Dong Qiang is a famous scholar, translator, literary historian and an expert in Chinese and French culture. He currently wears the hat of Chair of the Department of French Language and Literature at Peking University and Chairman of Prix Fu Lei. In 2009, Professor Dong was awarded “Insignes de Chevalier des Academiques” by the French government. In 2013, He received the most important award from the Institut de France: La Grande medaille de la Francophonie. In 2015, Professor Dong received the “French Legion of Honor” from French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who was on a visit to China. In 2016, Professor Dong received an Honorary Doctorate from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
 
The other new Correspondents are: José Ángel Gurría, former Foreign Minister and Finance Minister of Mexico, and the current Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); Tomasz Orlowski, a famous expert in medieval history and the Polish ambassador to Italy. Together with professor Dong Qiang, the three are taking over Jacques Parizeau, the 26th Premier of the Canadian province of Quebec; Boutros Boutros-Ghaliall, the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations; and Jean-Louis Crémieux-Brilhac, a member of the Free French Forces in World War II and later known as a famous French statesman and historian, all of whom had passed away in recent years.

It is reported that Professor Dong Qiang is the third to be nominated by the Institut de France in the field of humanities and arts in China, following Wu Guanzhong (the late Foreign Associate Member of the Académie des beaux-arts) and Rao Zongyi (Foreign Honorary Fellow of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres).
 
Professor Dong Qiang is going to attend the annual meeting of the Academy on November 14, formally taking office.
