2016 Qiu Shi Foundation Awards Ceremony held at Peking University
Oct 25, 2016

Peking University, October 23, 2016: On October 15, 12 individuals were presented with awards by the Hong Kong-based Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation at the Yingjie Exchange Center of Peking University, the top notch institution of higher education in China. Mr. Mou Sing Cha, Payson, chairman of the Foundation, advisors and professors Chen-Ning Yang, Sun Jiadong, Shi Yigong, Han Qide, chairman of Peking University Council Zhu Shanlu and other representatives were presented. Professor Liu Zhongfan and PKU student Li Xiaoxuan hosted the ceremony.

Two mathematicians with corresponding contributions in their own research areas were granted the most prestigious awards, the Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientist Award. They are Peng Shige, professor of Shandong University and adjunct professor of International Mathematical Center of Peking University and Zhang Yitang, professor of University of California, Santa Barbara and alumnus of Peking University, respectively. They both have an indissoluble bond with Peking University.

Peng Shige was acclaimed as “the global leader of probability theory and financial mathematics fields" by the United States Princeton University and as "the first person of Chinese financial mathematics" by the domestic media. He promoted the formation of financial mathematics, an emerging discipline, in the country from the scratch. Peng Shige has long been engaged in the field of probability theory and stochastic control research and made international leading level achievements in which he has made a groundbreaking contribution to backward stochastic differential equation theory and dynamic nonlinear mathematical expectation theory. These theories have been successfully applied to financial product pricing and dynamic financial risk measurement theory and calculation, which have shed a great light onour government's financial decision-making and financial risk control. Peng Shige shared his ups and downs in scientific research, and hoped that the award can encourage scientific research workers adhere to scientific researchin the award-winning speech.

Zhang Yitang made a major breakthrough inproblems which plagued the mathematical circle for a hundred years. He published a paper on an authoritative journal, "Journal of Mathematics", proving the existence of an infinite number of prime number pairs with a difference of less than 70 million. For the first time, the estimate of the lower bound of the interval primes is reduced from infinite to a finite number, making "infinite" become "finite". His research had a great sensationin the academic community and the international top academic journal "Nature" made a special report on thisin the "breakthrough news" column. On his groundbreaking basis, a large number of mathematicians continue to involve in the follow-up study of the twin prime conjecture. In his speech, Zhang Yitang expressed thanks to the foundation and his friends and relatives, and his gratitude to Peking University and his mentor.

Ten other scientists from several universities and institutes received Outstanding Young Scholar Awards. They are Professor Guan Qian, School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University, Professor Jin Yizheng, Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University, Professor Song Wei, School of Mathematics, Tsinghua University, Professor Zhang Xibo, Department of Physics, Peking University, Professor Jiao Yuchen, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Yang Jing, School of Life Sciences, Peking University, Professor Zeng Wenwen, Medicine School, Tsinghua University, Professor Gong Chen, Wireless Optical Communication and Network Research Center, University of Science and Technology of China, ProfessorYu Qian, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University and Professor Zhang Yihui, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Tsinghua University, respectively.

This year is the fourth year after the "Qiushi Outstanding Young Scholar Award" resumed, which is dedicated to fostering leaders in the development of science and technology in China for the next 20 years.

The second half of the session is Panel Discussion with the topic, “the Arrival of Original Basic Research Time in China." Table of the guests frequently interacted. The members of Qiu Shi family shared their own views, which made the scene filled with warm and joy. Most people were optimistic about China's original spirit and research prospects. Scholars also talked about the importance of science and culture, the atmosphere of science, the scientific evaluation system.

Founded in 1994 by the famous industrialist Mr. CHA Chi Ming, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Foundation is committed to upholding and promoting the core values of "scientific spirit and humanistic sentiments".
