Premier Li urges innovation in higher education

Peking University April 21, 2016: On April 15th, after inspecting Tsinghua University and Peking University, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended a symposium on innovation for higher education at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center of Peking University.During the symposium, Li called for deeper reforms in higher education to build world-class universities and an innovation-oriented nation.

According to Li, education is the foundation of economic development and education reform is a strategic move in the process of building socialism with Chinese characteristics. Therefore, he stressed that only when higher education is fully developed can China maintain a relatively long period of high economic growth.
 
Li then pointed out that higher education have the obligation to help build up an innovation-oriented nation. In order to achieve this goal, universities should enroll more students from rural areas and undertake an innovative strategy. Li urged universities to cultivate students’ innovation ability as well as their practical capability.
 
Li also emphasized that the country should create an environment favorable to higher education reform. At the same time, it is equally important to build first-class disciplines and to encourage teachers and researchers to freely put forward their original ideas.
