The Yenching Academy holds the Yenching Global Symposium

Peking University, Mar. 28, 2016: During March 24-26, organized by the Yenching Academy (YCA) of Peking University, the Yenching Global Symposium was held at PKU. The Symposium kicked off on the morning of March 24 at Qiulin Lecture Hall.


Professor Yuanming, Dean of the Yenching Academy, attended the opening ceremony with other faculty members. Some distinguished guests were also invited to deliver opening speeches, including Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU, and Fang Jun, Deputy Director-General of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education.

192 delegates from around 50 countries and regions attended the Symposium, which reflected the theme of this event – “China meets the world, the world comes to China.” Half of the delegates were Yenching Scholars and the other half were talented graduate students and young professionals from a wide range of fields. During this three-day event, the delegates shared different perspectives on China’s role and further discussed some issues on politics, economy, history and culture.

As a Yenching Scholar and Chairman of the Symposium, Laya Maheshwari overviewed the preliminary stages of the Symposium. “We have undergone some difficulties during preparation. However, due to everybody’s effort, the problems were overcame in the end, just like a miracle,” he said.

Professor Yuan Ming expressed her appreciation and how she felt touched by the Symposium, as she remarked in her opening speech: “being initiated and brought together by the students themselves.” She also welcomed the delegates to attend the event, “We trust you just as you trust us,” she said.

Vice President Li Yansong introduced the academic performance and extra-curricular activities of the YCA, including the student-led publication Yenching Review and the site seeing activities.

Fang Jun pointed out that Chinese government has paid high attention to the foreign students’ overseas study in China and expressed his hope that every delegate would have fruitful experience during the Symposium and in PKU.

Some guests were invited to give keynote speeches after the opening ceremony, including Wang Jisi, President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies at Peking University, Andrew Yan, the Founding Managing Partner of the venture capital fund SAIF Partners, Jorge Heine, the Ambassador of Chile to China, the Hon’ble Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia, He Yafei, the former Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ken Jarrett, the President of the American Chamber and Commerce.

Various seminars, pop-up presentations, field trips, and other activities were also held during this three-day event.
